The solvent extraction of Zn2+, Cd2+, Al3+, Ga3+ and In3+ into cyclohexane has been investigated in the presence of the nitrogen-containing macrocyclic ligands, diaza-15-crown-5 (DA15C5), diaza-18-crown-6 (DA18C6), cryptand[2.2.1] (CR221), and cryptand[2.2.2] (CR222) in the aqueous phase. In the extraction of Zn2+ and Cd2+ with benzoyltrifluoroacetone (BFA) and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), a decrease in the distribution ratio (D) of Cd2+ was observed with DA15C5, DA18C6, CR221 and CR222. The extraction behaviour of Zn2+ did not change by adding the nitrogen-containing macrocyclic ligands. Consequently, an improved separation of Zn2+ from Cd2+ could be achieved. The quantitative extraction separation of Zn2+ and Cd2+ could be obtained using CR221 as the ion-size selective masking reagent. In the extraction of Al3+, Ga3+ and In3+ with benzoylacetone (BA), a decrease of the D value is observed for Al3+ and Ga3+, while that for In3+ did not change. The complex formation constants between the metal ions and the nitrogen-containing macrocyclic ligands have been obtained via the present solvent extraction method.
