A bidirectional screw‐sense induction of poly(quinoxaline‐2,3‐diyl)s that depends on the degree of polymerization

A study demonstrated the bidirectional screw-sense induction by tuning the degree of polymerization (DP) of poly(quinoxaline-2,3-diyl)s (PQXs) with a theoretical model. It prepared a series of PQXs 1(n) that bear (S)-3-octyloxy side chains with varied DP (n) and measured their circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The PQX 100mer 1(100) showed a negative peak at 366.0 nm in n-hexane, which suggested an M-helical conformation [Fig. 1(b)]. In contrast, 1(100) showed a positive peak at 366.0 nm in cyclohexane, suggesting an inversion of the helical main chain to a P-helical conformation. It was discovered that 1(10) and 1(20) adopted M-helical conformations in cyclohexane, while 1(60), 1(80), and 1(100) adopted P-helical conformations therein.
