Taxonomic examination on three unidentified Lambertella specimens in TNS by Y-J. Zhao1), T. Hosoya2), M. Kakishima1). (1) Tsukuba Univ.; 2) National Museum of Nature and Science)

The genus Lambertella is characterized by the substratal stroma and the brown coloration of ascospores observed in various stages of development. Lambertella is one of the largest genera in the family Rutstroemiaceae. In spite of economic potential, such as antibiotic production, Lambertella has been poorly studied in taxonomy, and only 7 species has been reported from Japan among 63 species reported in the world. During the examination of specimens conserved in TNS (National Museum of Nature and Science), three unidentified Lambertella specimens were found. 1) Lambertella sp. 1 (TNS-F-36994) collected from the petiole of Fatsia japonica was similar in gross morphology of apothecia, morphology of hairs, asci, ascospores, and paraphyses with L. subrenispora, but differed in ectal excipular cell arrangement . 2) Lambertella sp. 2 (TNS-F-25246) was collected from the leaf of Pyrola incarnata. Although it showed the closest morphological similarity in ectal and medullary excipulum, asci, and ascospores with L. copticola, it differed from the latter in negative reaction of ascal apex against Melzer’s reagent. 3) Lambertella sp. 3 (TNS-F-30402) collected on the leaf veins of Mallotus japonicus had shorter stipe and smaller apothecia than L. corni-maris, but from the apothecial anatomy it was presumed to be L. corni-maris (the type of Lambertella). The sequence similarity of ITS-5.8S rRNA also supported this identification. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on combined D1-D2-ITS-5.8S region supported that Lambertella sp. 1 and 3 were in the same clade with L. corni-maris. Although more work is required to settle the specific taxonomy of these three species, the hosts of these were found to be new for Lambertella hitherto reported.
