The Citizen in the “Cyclops” episode is said to be modeled on Michael Cusack, a founder of the Gaelic Athletic Association. In fact, Joyce himself used the name of Cusack in his earlier drafts, but he removed it before publication. Joyce, then, indicates a real person while deleting his name and creating an unclearly identified one in his fiction.
