The purpose of this study was to conduct meta-analysis of data from a survey of respiratory function of spinal cord injury patients between before and after the usage of abdominal binders (AB) and thereby investigate the effects of ABs on respiratory function. Reports published by May 2015 were searched using Pubmed, CINAHL and Cochrane Library and data from 15 reports that met the selection criteria were integrated in meta-analysis. Results indicated that fitting an AB led to significant increases in vital capacity (mean difference: 0.31L, 95% confidence interval: 0.15 – 0.47L), inspiratory reserve volume (0.49L, 0.18 – 0.80L), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (0.23L, 0.03 – 0.42L) and maximal expiratory flow (0.52L/s, 0.14 – 0.90L/s), and significant decreases in functional residual capacity (-0.46L, -0.70 – -0.22L) and residual volume of (-0.59L, -0.87 – -0.31L). In the future, it appears necessary to more of the similar research results and to investigate indications for ABs based on the results of this study.
