Manami GOTO, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of International Resource Sciences, Akita University and an Excellent Young Researcher of the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER) Project. She was a visiting scholar at New York University Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, until June 2023, and is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, UK.


Manami's main areas of interest are dress, material culture, oral history, and the rituals of women in the Persian Gulf. She obtained her PhD in Arab and Islamic Studies from the University of Exeter in 2019 with a doctoral studentship from the Centre for Gulf Studies and MA in Gulf Studies from Qatar University in 2015. Before and during her postgraduate studies, she also completed Arabic language courses at Kuwait University (2011-2012) and Qatar University (2012-2013), and Persian language courses at the University of Tehran (2015 and 2016).
She is currently researching the dress politics of the Gulf Arab states, analysing how migrant women have utilised different types of dress to express their sense of belonging, integrate into society, and reject certain social norms imposed on them.
