The stratigraphy of the Plio-Pleistocene in Niigata district are deseribed, and the time-space distribution of sedimentary facies are examined. In the land area, the Plio-Pleistocene is called the Uonuma Group, divided lithologically into the Lowermost, Lower, Middle, and Upper parts. On the other hand, in the coastal area, the Plio-Pleistocene is divided lithologically into the Nishiyama, Haizume, and Nishigoshi formations, in ascending order. On the basis of correlations of pyroclastic marker beds, the upper part of the Nishiyama Formation is assigned to the Lowermost and Lower parts of the Uonuma Group, the Haizume Formation to the Middle Part, and the Nishigoshi Formation to the Upper Part. The following sedimentary facies are distinguished in the Plio-Pleistocene; bathyal-continental slope, neritic-shelf, littoral-delta, inner bay to lagoon, lacustline to swamp, fluvial, and alluvial fan facies. Generally the marine facies is distributed to the north, and the terrestrial facies to the south. The Uonuma Group is composed of the littoral to terrestrial facies. The Nishiyama Group consists of bathyal facies, and the Haizume Formation of neritic facies. The Plio-Pleistocene in Niigata district was formed through a process of progradation caused by uplift of provenance to the south and east, and through the several times of transgression and regression, probably caused by the eustatic sea level change.
