Spot bonding of aluminum alloy 5052 by the rotating tools was investigated. The long probe tool contacts with the interface and transmits the rotational motion to the interface directly, but the short probe tool transmits indirectly. The rotating tools with different probe length were used to evaluate the indirect action on the interface of the rotating tool in the bonding. Spot bonding was carried out at the probe insert depth where the bottom of the probe never reached to the interface. The lap joints fractured by interface fracture or plug fracture. The fracture modes were affected by the probe insert depth. The friction heat by the shoulder of the rotating tool promoted the softening and the motion of the interface. The tool insert depth affected the joint strength as well as the probe insert depth. The temperature of the surface of the lapped plate rose to about 700 K. These results show that the indirect motion transmission to the interface bonded the lap joint of 5052 alloy.
