Dose Estimation in Neutron Capture Therapy for Liver Tumors

In the beginning of 2005, the application to body tumors such as lung tumors and liver tumors were started at the Kyoto University Reactor. Six clinical irradiations for liver tumors were already carried out. Liver is the largest internal-organs, and liver tumors are usually seated at the deeper positions. Then, the multi-directional irradiation is applied in BNCTs for liver tumors. The injection of boron compound is performed in the combination with the arterial-enbolization technique. The boron-dose estimation is directly performed under the BNCT irradiation using the gamma-ray telescope system. On the criterion that the dose for 50% volume of normal liver is deposited to approximately 2 Gy-eq, the irradiation time is decided for the reference to the dose-volume histogram by the planning simulation. The effectiveness of this dose-estimation method was confirmed in the actual BNCT irradiations. Some problems to be solved and improved were made clear. The development for the geometrical changes under the multi-directional irradiation is the most important subject at the present time.
