In this article I will focus on how the techniques which James Joyce used to represent his characters’ consciousness were elevated to a freer type of representation which flows across the characters’ thought boundaries. The stream-of-consciousness writing style, which Joyce used, is a way of writing which covers all the different means used by an author to convey his or her characters’ thought processes. In the more mature stage of Joyce’s writing career, he created characters whose stream of consciousness flows freely into the consciousness of other characters. I will first discuss the development of Joyce’s experiment with this writing technique, and then, after a brief discussion of the ordinary stream-of-consciousness style, I will discuss what I think of this method of writing.
