Crystals possessing well-ordered structures with a periodicity of optical wavelength are called photonic crystals (PCs), showing photonic band gap (PBG). The phenomena caused by PBG have been extensively studied because of its fundamental interest as well as various application viewpoints. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) form a helical structure with a pitch in a visible wavelength range, and are regarded as 1-D photonic crystal. The PBG structure of CLCs can be modulated by external factors, such as temperature. In recent years, the lasing in dye-doped CLCs by optical excitation attracts much attention. In this study, we present the characteristics of the spin-coating polymer CLC (PCLC) films and the narrowing of the emission, which could lead to lasing action in dye-doped PCLCs.
